The cool girl left her flat white pumps to fade on my doorstep. Her eyes watched in hushed detachment the quiet street outside soothe in a glowing apricot balm provided by a sleepy sun as an immaculately dressed waiter arrived with a tall gin and tonic pinned with a delicate crest of lime. Barefoot, she took out a cigarette and tapped it twice upon our small wooden table, after which it dangled nonchalantly from lightly blushed lips. "No shoes today?" I inquire, as if it wasn't already obvious. She disposed of the cigarette after just two breaths and refreshed her palate with a sip of gin. Nina Simone sang of a mysterious See Line Woman. "I let my feet lead me forward." She replied, as if it wasn't already obvious. "Oh." Cryptic. But then again, she did always say there's no time for education. No Need for Education |
| History What was the most difficult aspect when you became a designer? As a designer you have to be determined. You need to see every detail to its end and believe that with a resolute mind you can overcome any difficulty. From its practical aspect to the technical side, what was the most difficult part of the design process? Basically, I was self taught in the art of clothes so the hardest thing for me was taking an image born in my mind and making it into an actual physical form. Concept What's been the main inspiration behind A.K? I've been inspired by everything in day to day life. I found that by slightly altering my perception towards the things that we all normally overlook, I can bring a fascinating new method of approach to my work. What's the brand concept? My wish is to combine fashion with fantasy. I want to pursue the peculiarities of beauty to produce garments that are original and dramatic. What's been your inspiration for the latest collection? This collection is connected with techno's musical descendant, trance. I've tried to express the nature of this genre by upsetting the balance of the silhouette and distorting various details in the garments. What is "style" for you? Not being captive to an image. What does your work reflect? Clothes born out of my imagination, the excitement when making designs and patterns and betraying what's right. What's different about A.K compared to other brands? Being self taught, I'm not confined to any fixed way of designing thereby giving my ideas a sense of flexibility. Clothes How many people are involved in the production of A.K clothes? I have friends who help me, but basically it's just me. Do you have a favourite piece in your current collection? A jacket reconstructed from 16 different T-shirts. One word to describe A.K... Plaything Future In terms of expansion, what's the future of A.K? I want to advance with each season, make charming clothes and seek new ways of expression. Hereafter, do you have a target or ambition for A.K? My greatest ambition and my main goal at the moment is to continue to make clothes with my heart and soul. Then I believe paths will open for me. Are you considering expanding into the international market? I feel myself and my work are equally bound. The feeling to try and see where we both can go from here is immense so I would definitely like to play a hand at taking my work abroad. Is there something you'd like to try outside of the fashion world? Right now i want to focus on creating beautiful clothes and firmly establishing the A.K brand. |

Wolf Like You Dressed in white she rose soundlessly with the moon. Hands reached for pockets as if they hid the keys to offset solitude. With no shoes to grab I tentatively ventured forth, "Will I see you again?" "This isn't a Perrault fairy tale so who can really say." Ashantha Japan-Fashion.com |
