TOKYO in "EDO" period. Two and a half hours had passed on the slow train from Tokyo. Occasionally, I would take a rest from reading and watch in silence the flowing scene that lay beyond my still in motion looking glass, and each time the rhythm of the landscape grew slowly more in tempo with the sun.Sprawling concrete buildings turned to dust in the earth of fir covered mountains; the aggressive jeers of drills and horns found solace amidst light-footed birds calling excitedly for spring... I could all but hold my breath to savor the wistful tones of an Earth still in joy as I passed beneath a majestic gateway to a quaint village in Nikko, seemingly undisturbed since the seventeenth century. Edo Wonderland, as this village-cum-theme park is known, serves to recreate the prosperity and atmosphere of Edo period Japan. The former name of Tokyo, the Edo period began in 1603 and spanned over two hundred years. It was a time when the powerful samurai roamed under the furtive gaze of skillful ninja and some of the finest arts and architecture in Japan was created. |
